Frequently Asked Questions

How did Hood Famous get started?

In 2013, Geo and Chera started a pop-up dinner series called Food & Sh-t. For each dinner, Geo was in charge of the savory pre-fixe menu, while Chera made the sweets to end the night. Early on, Chera made an Ube Cheesecake that instantly won the hearts of their friends and neighbors. The cheesecake took on a life of its own; from the pop-up to wholesaling at Uwajimaya, a brick and mortar in 2016 and now a second location in Chinatown-International District.

Where can your desserts be found?

You will find our desserts at our original location at Hood Famous Bakeshop (2325½ NW Market St) in Ballard, Seattle, at our second location Hood Famous Cafe + Bar (504 5th Avenue S, Suite 107A) in the Chinatown-International District neighborhood of Seattle, and in various local grocery stores and restaurants listed here.

Do you ship your desserts?

We do not ship our cheesecakes or any other refrigerated desserts. You may pre-order all desserts for local pick-up only in Ballard, Seattle, WA here.

Why Ube?

Chera chose to incorporate ube into a New York Style Cheesecake because ube was an ingredient that she and her mom used frequently when they baked together in the Philippines. Being a first-generation immigrant, the ube cheesecake is a mending of cultures; Chera’s foundation of being raised in the Philippines and the influence of Americanized desserts living in the states coming together in this Ube Cheesecake.

What is ube and what is taro?

Ube is the vibrant purple yam originating from the Philippines. The flavor is subtly sweet and smooth. Though taro can be confused with ube, we think of it as a cousin, since it's not completely purple and has a lighter taste.
