chill vibes for creative space to work + connect + slow down + relax✌🏽friends playing records with friends 🌼
Diggin' Sunday (2006–2010) began as an opportunity to support Tribal Cafe, an independent café owned by filmmaker and producer Joshua Jose in Historic Filipinotown. Los Angeles had officially designated the neighborhood in 2002, with its landmark signage installed in 2006, and Tribal was emerging as an important cultural hub for the Filipino American community. The space itself carried a rich history formerly as Traveler's Cafe, a gathering place frequented by writer and labor activist Carlos Bulosan during the 1930s and 40s.
The concept was also shaped by Spearituals, the open-turntable gathering created by DJ, poet, organizer, and artist Wendell Pascual. Originating at Nova Express Cafe in Fairfax before finding a home at Tribal Cafe, Spearituals celebrated vinyl culture, community, and connection through music.
For Joel Quizon, founder of Diggin' Sunday, the inspiration came from childhood Sundays spent listening to his father's records. Diggin' Sunday sought to capture that feeling through a laid-back, inclusive gathering where DJs and record collectors could share sounds rarely heard in clubs or parties. Along the way, it brought people together in Historic Filipinotown and became part of the neighborhood's cultural story.
Today Diggin' Sunday extends that story to Seattle at Hood Famous Cafe + Bar, to continue inclusively gathering in Historic Filipinotowns especially in these turbulent times. Consider this monthly Sunday y/our space to slow down and connect in the frequency of music and friends old and new. DJs and record collectors are welcome to join the rotational exchange. Hosted by Maya Santos (equanimous1) with DJ Daps1.
