ARTIST STATEMENTARTIST BIOJames is a Seattle-based mixed media resin artist and cultural worker whose three-decade practice sits at the intersection of critical pedagogy, community archivist, and visual culture. Self-taught since 1997, he centers his practice on mixed-media resin assemblages that structurally and conceptually examine identity, transpacific histories, and nostalgia. James holds an M.A. in Asian American Studies from UCLA, an academic foundation that heavily informs his research-driven visual output and community engagement. His solo exhibitions have been hosted by institutional galleries including the University of California, Santa Barbara, ArtXContemporary, and Antioch University Seattle. As a curator, he has co-developed visual exhibitions at the Wing Luke Asian Museum, M. Rosetta Hunter Gallery, and Columbia City Gallery. James is a founding member of isangmahal arts kollective, Mixed Up Productions, and La Enkanto Kollective, co-curating several self-published anthologies and spoken-word audio archives that document contemporary diaspora narratives.
